“I’m here to carry the message from the silenced, to show you some of Native America’s beauty and to encourage our collective consciousness to re- imagine the way we see each other.”
Matika Wilbur is a visual storyteller from the Swinomish and Tulalip peoples of coastal Washington. She started as a commercial photographer in Los Angeles but decided that she wanted to create portrait art that deeply communicated people's lives and experiences. Matika started Project 562, which is named after the 562 Native American sovereign territories in the United States. The goal of Project 562 is to overcome historical inaccuracies, stereotypical representations, and silenced Native Americans. She is sharing stories that Native Americans would like to be told.
