Frida Kahlo
Painter (1907-1954)
---------------------------------------------------------
"I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration."
Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico on July 6th, 1907 and died July 13th, 1954. When she was 18 year old she was in a horrible bus accident and spent more than a year in bed recovering. During her recovery, she started painting in oils creating deliberately naive self-portraits. In 1929 she married muralist Diego Rivera, whose approach to art and political activism complemented her own.
They both traveled to the United States and France, where she encountered many influential figures from the worlds of art and politics. She used her art as both a political statements and personal statements about women. After she died her reputation soared, beginning in the 1980s with the publications of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians.
